Volleyball Suffers 3-0 Setback to Sacred Heart in Final Home Match

NEW YORK - The Columbia volleyball team lost their final match of the 2011 season in Levien Gymnasium, 3-0 to Sacred Heart. The Pioneers defeated the Lions 25-10, 25-17, 25-21. With the loss, the Lions are now 15-8 overall and remain 9-3 in the Ivy League. 

Set one saw the two teams stay close in the beginning, as the score was tied up at 6-6. But with a kill from Sacred Heart, the Pioneers went on a roll. Sacred Heart scored four straight points to widen the lead to 11-6, and then up 17-10, Sacred Heart would go on a run once again. With senior Ashlyn Trimble serving, the Pioneers outscored the Lions 8-0 in the final run, ending the first game, 25-10. 

The second set followed a similar pattern, as the two teams stayed locked together early on, before Sacred Heart went up 9-8, and stayed up for the rest of the set. Columbia managed to score four points facing set point to stay in the match, but in the end, the Pioneers took it, 25-17, going up 2-0 in the match. 

The third and final set proved to be the closest of the match, but Sacred Heart took the early lead and never gave it up. Back-to-back kills from the Pioneers made it 5-2, and Sacred Heart would not relinquish the lead. Columbia once again rallied late in the set to stay with the Pioneers, but a kill from Maile Hetherington ended it, 25-21 in favor of Sacred Heart, who took the match, 3-0. a

Denise Dearman had three kills (hitting .375) and four total blocks, while Madeline Rumer had a team-high six total blocks in the loss. Sophomore Sierra Worthy led the Lions with a team-high six kills and a team-high eight digs in the match, while Heather Braunagel had five kills and two blocks. First-year Caitlin Brenton also added four blocks. 

Up next for Columbia is the final Ivy League weekend of the season, with Ivy League championship implications. Columbia will head to Philadelphia and Princeton, to take on Penn and Princeton, Friday, November 11 at 7 p.m and Saturday, November 12 at 5 p.m.
