Wyatt Baker Earns Spot On U.S. Team At FILA Junior World Team Trials

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Columbia rising sophomore Wyatt Baker will have the honor of representing the United States at the FILA Junior World Championships on Sept. 4-9 in Pattaya, Thailand.

At the FILA Junior World Team Trials held Saturday night at Palmer High School in Colorado Springs, Colo., Baker made the U.S. Greco-Roman team at 120 kg/264.5 pounds after a dominant performance in the Challenge Tournament and the Championship Series. Rising junior Eric Fajardo also competed at the FILA Junior World Team Trials was within two victories of joining Baker in Thailand this fall.

"Both Wyatt and Eric competed very well at the world trials," Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling Carl Fronhofer said. "I am very excited for Wyatt and the opportunity that he has created for himself. He will gain a wealth of experience competing in the World Championships. Our goal at Columbia is to build a world class wrestling program and preparing guys to compete for and make Junior, University, and Senior world teams is part of that process."

Baker is the first-ever Columbia wrestler to earn a spot on the FILA Junior Greco-Roman U.S. team and compete at the FILA Junior World Championships.

In the semifinal round in the Challenge Tournament, Baker, representing New York Athletic Clubs, defeated David Woody (YES Greensboro) by fall, 3-1, 1:14. In the championship series, he defeated Parker Betts (USOEC) two matches to zero. Baker won the first match, 1-0, 1-1. In the second match, Baker prevailed, 1-0, 0-4, 1-0.

Fajardo was also vying for a spot on at the FILA Junior World Team Trials at the 74 kg/163 pounds. In the Challenge Tournament, Fajardo wrestled all the way to the first-place bout but lost to Geordan Speiller (Florida Jets), 1-0, 3-2. Fajardo was representing New York Athletic Clubs.
