Wrestling Takes Down Cal Poly and SF State at Mustang Duals
SAN LUIS OPISBO, Calif. - The Columbia wrestling team improved to 3-3 in dual matches this season, knocking off host Cal Poly, 28-13, and San Francisco State, 28-8, at the Mustang Duals Sunday. CSU Bakersfield defeated the Lions, 22-12, in the final match of the day.
Columbia lost just three individual matches in its victory over Cal Poly. In the 174-pound battle, Stephen West picked up his fourth fall of the season, pinning Paul Woodman in 2:03. The Lions also notched a pair of sudden victory wins at 149 and 197 pounds. Alec Mooradian secured his first win of the season, winning via tiebreaker, 5-3, over Damien Arredondo, while Nick Mills earned his 10th win of the season via the identical score. At 165 pounds, Josh Houldsworth recorded his third major decision of 2012-13, defeating Connor King, 9-0. Chris Manna tallied a forfeit win at 285 and Matt Bystol (141 pounds) and Chad Ryan (157 pounds) each registered favorable decisions.
The Lions were even more dominant against SF State, winning eight of ten matches. West earned his first technical fall this season over AJ Simon, 16-0, in 4:47. Matt Idelson brought his win total to six this season, pinning Thomas Martin in 3:19 in the 197-pound bout. Columbia's other six victories came via decision. At 125 pounds, Robery Dyar topped Jairo Rodriguez, 7-2. Manna edged past Richard Segovia, 6-5, for his second win of the day, while Houldsworth shutout Isaiah Jimenez for a 2-0 victory. Mooradian and Tyler Sheridan rounded out the wins for Columbia at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively.
The tables turned against Columbia in the final dual against CSU Bakerfield, as the Roadrunners won seven matches for a 22-12 victory. Houldsworth and West though, tallied their third wins of the day. West added another pin to punctuate an exceptional day on the mat, putting away Andrew Balch in 2:33. Houldsworth and Nick Mills both captured victories by decision. At 165 pounds, David Meza suffered an 8-4 defeat at the hands of Houldsworth, while Mills posted a 7-4 decision over Frankie Hurtado in the 197-pound match.
Columbia was also represented Saturday at the Franklin & Marshall Open. At 184 pounds, Shane Hughes used four straight wins to secure the top spot on the podium. After an opening-round bye, Hughes pinned Marcus Dwaileebe from Belmont Abbey in 1:28. Following a forfeit in the quarterfinals, Hughes recorded his second pin of the tournament against Elliot Riddick, this time in 5:41. Navy's James Mannier served as a formidable opponent in the finals, but Hughes walked away with the title, notching an 8-6 decision.
Wrestling for the first time as a collegian, Angelo Amenta finished in fourth at 133 pounds. The first-year from Oregon, Ohio opened competition with a 3-1 decision over Clarion's Tim Bailey. Amenta earned his first collegiate pin in the round of 16, taking down UMBC's Kyle Nichols in 2:56. After falling in the quarterfinals, Amenta began his trek through the wrestlebacks with decisions over Rider's Paulie Kirchner and UMBC's Kekura Musa. A 16-3 major decision over the Terriers' Stephen Bean advanced Amenta to the third-place match, Maryland's Shyheim Brown captured the 7-2 decision.
At 157 pounds, Connor Sutton became the third Lion to place, finishing fifth. Sutton used decisions over Rutgers' Mikey Simmons and VMI's Mike Burnett to reach the quarterfinals. It took just 18 short seconds for Sutton to pin F&M's Eric Norgand to reach the semifinals. Sutton, though, would suffer defeat in his next two matches and finish fifth following a medical forfeit.
Columbia's grapplers will next be on the mat Jan. 18 when the Lions travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to take on Bucknell at 7 p.m.
