Wrestling Drops Heartbreaker at Princeton, 18-16
PRINCETON, N.J. – Columbia wrestling jumped out to a 9-0 lead through the first three bouts against Princeton Friday night, but the Tigers scored three major decisions over the course of their five bout victories to edge the Lions, 18-16.
The lighter weight classes got Columbia going early, as Penn Gottfried (125 pounds), Angelo Amenta (133) and Matt Bystol (141) each picked up decisions in their bouts. Gottfried came away with a four-point win, 9-5, against Ryan Cash, while Amenta slipped past Garrett Frey by a single point, 5-4. The 141-pound bout was low scoring, with Bystol shutting out Jordan Laster, 2-0.
Adam Krop got the Tigers on the board with a major decision at 149 pounds and Kevin Moylan closed the deficit to just two with a decision in Princeton’s favor at 157 pounds.
Senior Josh Houldsworth fired back for Columbia, defeating Judd Ziegler, 8-5, in the 165-pound bout. Shane Hughes continued his standout season with a major decision for Columbia at 174 pounds, posting a 10-1 victory against Ryan Callahan. The win put Columbia ahead 16-7, but Princeton earned major decisions at 184 and 197 pounds to get within one, 16-15, with Ray O’Donnell’s 8-2 decision at heavyweight giving the Tigers the team win.
Columbia has a short turnaround, heading down to Philadelphia to take on Penn at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Fans can follow the action live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
