AKRON, Ohio – The impressive offseason continued for the Columbia wrestling program, as eight current student-athletes, alumni and staff members earned All-America recognition at the ASICS University and FILA Cadet Nationals in Akron, Ohio last weekend.
In Greco, Johnson Mai, Shane Hughes, Connor Sutton, Ben Villaret and Elijah Sullivan all placed in the top-eight. The freestyle portion of the tournament saw Markus Scheidel, alumnus Steve Santos and current assistant coach Adam Hall earn All-America status.
Sullivan was the top placewinner on the Greco side at 66 kg, using a 14-4 technical fall over Sahid Kargbo (Patriot Elite) to earn third-place honors. Villaret was able to take fifth at 75 kg, with an injury default victory. Hughes came away with seventh place at 80 kg, also via injury default, while Sutton won by fall over Daniel Ownbey (Strong and Courageous) in 1:40 at 71 kg to also take seventh. Mai finished eighth at 59 kg.
Scheidel clinched seventh place at 74 kg in the freestyle competition via injury default in the medal match. Former Columbia NCAA All-American Steve Santos captured sixth place at 70 kg, following his own injury default in the placing matches. Assistant coach Adam Hall reached the finals of the 70 kg weight class, but fell 2-0 to James Green (Titan Mercury), via two decisions, 4-1 and 4-2.
