Wrestling Shuts Down Brown, 34-4

NEW YORK -- Shane Hughes won by fall and Nick Mills picked up a major decision victory as the Columbia wrestling team dominated Brown on Saturday, taking nine of 10 bouts in a 34-4 Lions win at University Gymnasium.

After Harvard (5-10, 2-3 Ivy League) climbed out to a 4-0 win after a major decision in the first bout of the day, Columbia (7-4, 2-2 Ivy League) shut down the Bears the rest of the match. Senior captain Kyle Gilchrist (24-10) got the Lions on the scoreboard at 133 pounds, using two takedowns and 4:52 of riding time to defeat TJ Popolizio, 5-1.

Columbia pulled ahead, 6-4, when sophomore 141-pounder Matt Bystol (19-14) earned a gritty win over over Grant Overcashier thanks to a three-point near fall I the third period that gave him the 7-4 victory.

At 149, junior Steve Santos (18-6) used an escape, takedown and 2:41 of riding time to shut out Ricky Bailey, 4-0.

Junior Jake O’Hara (25-10) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first period of the 157 bout and stayed in control the rest of the way to edge Zack Kulczycki, 5-3.

Senior Eren Civan (7-9) also posted a shutout at 165, using two takedowns, an escape and 2:37 of riding time to take a 6-0 win over Jeff Lemmer.

At 174, junior Stephen West (28-10) just needed two takedowns to beat David Foxen, 4-0, and , and give the Lions a commanding 18-4 advantage.

First-year Hughes (19-9) had the big win on the day at 184, taking just 2:07 to pin Brandon Vorrius for his ninth win by fall of the season. Hughes’ victory clinched to Columbia team win as he extended the score to 24-4 with just two possible bouts remaining.

Mills (11-12) continued the Lions’ momentum, dominating Marcos Aranda at 197 for a 10-1 major decision. The Columbia junior had 7-1 advantage after the first period thanks to two takedowns and a three-point near fall. A reversal in the second and 3:49 of riding time handed Mills the major decision.

Senior captain Kevin Lester improved to 26-9 when he won by forfeit at 285.
