NEW YORK - Sharay Hale and Kevin Lester have been named the Columbia Student-Athletes of the Month for January. Hale has continued to be a dominant force for the indoor track and field team, while Lester continues to lead the wrestling team on the mat.
Hale just keeps on getting better for Columbia track & field. The junior has set a new school record early in the season and is dominating the Ivy League. At the Armory Invitational, Hale won the 500m in 1:12.49, hitting the fastest time in the Ivy League by over two seconds. At the Penn State Invitational, Hale notched her two fastest times of the year. In the 400m, Hale hit 53.77 seconds, which is the fastest time in the Ivy League this year, and was the third fastest 400m time in the nation. She also set a new school mark in the 200m dash, as she ran that in 24.15, breaking her own record, set in 2010. It is the fastest time in the League this year, and just two tenths of a second from an all-time Ivy League record.
In the month of January, Lester was perfect, as the junior heavyweight did not lose a match, finishing 9-0. Lester began the month with a major decision against Army on January 7, and pinned his opponent from Binghamton the following day. He followed that weekend up by winning the New York State title, the second of his career. Lester closed out the month of January by finishing 3-0 in dual action against Millersville, Rider and Franklin & Marshall, pinning two of his three opponents. Not only does the junior co-captain lead his team with 18 wins so far this season, he also has a team-high five pins.
