Wrestling Ready to Roar at EIWA Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Columbia wrestling team will travel to Bucknell this weekend to take part in the 107th Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships.  The tournament will take place on Saturday, March 5 and Sunday, March 6 in Sojka Pavilion held on the campus of Bucknell.

Session 2: 3:30 p.m. (Semifinals)

Sunday, March 6
Session 3: 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (Consolation Semifinals, Place Finals)
Session 4: 3 p.m. (Finals)

Columbia had four wrestlers ranked in the top-six in the EIWA in the final poll released on February 21. Santos was ranked No. 6 at 149 pounds, Civan No. 5 at 165 pounds, Mills No. 5 at 184 pounds, and Lester No. 4 at heavyweight.  As a team, the Lions ranked No. 7 overall behind Cornell, Lehigh, Rutgers, American, Penn and Navy.

Last year, Columbia finished with 65 team points to place tied for eighth with Army.  Eren Civan highlighted the Lions' run with a fourth place finish in the 165 pound bracket, earning an automatic bid for the NCAA Championships.  Kevin Lester placed fifth at heavyweight, and Steve Santos and Andrew Grabfelder both placed sixth at 149 and 133 pounds, respectively.

Live video of the entire tournament will be broadcast online on Bison Vision (www.BucknellBison.com). The first three sessions will be free, while Sunday's finals will require a subscription.  Finally, live results will be updated regularly at BucknellBison.com, NWCAonline.com and Escapesports.com.

The EIWA will have 45 automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Championships, which will take place March 17-19 in Philadelphia, Pa. There will be an additional 49 at-large qualifiers who do not earn automatic berths.  These spots will be selected at the conclusion of all conference tournaments and will be announced on March 9.  Here is the breakdown by weight class of the automatic qualifiers for the EIWA.

Six Columbia wrestlers earned All-Ivy League recognition, including a unanimous first team selection for Kevin Lester at heavyweight.  In addition to Lester, Eren Civan (165) and Nick Mills (184) each earned a spot on the second team, while Kyle Gilchrist (133), Steve Santos (149), and Mike Pushpak (197) were named honorable mention.

Columbia's NCAA qualifiers will participate at the NCAA Championships in the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa. on March 17-19.
