PHILADELPHIA, PA. - Two Columbia wrestlers will travel to nearby Philadelphia, Pa. to compete at the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships.  The three-day tournament, featuring the nation's best wrestlers, will take place at the Wells Fargo Center on March 17-19. After two successful runs at the EIWA Championships earlier this month, Eren Civan and Kevin Lester both automatically qualified for the championships.

Civan earned his ticket to the NCAA tournament after a runner-up finish at the EIWA Championships at 165 pounds.  The junior was seeded fourth in his weightclass and was a perfect 3-0 in action on the first day of competition after pinning Andrew Lowy of Princeton in 1:44, downing fifth-seeded Stephen Burak of Penn, 3-2 to advance to the semifinals, and upsetting top-seeded Brandon Hatchett of Lehigh, who was also ranked No. 15 in the country. In the finals, Civan dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Rutger's Scott Winston, who was ranked No. 8 in the country, in the first tiebreaker.

At heavyweight, Lester finished 3-2 at the EIWA tournament after he pinned Joe McMullan of Bucknell in 1:11, and Stryker Lane of Cornell in 1:55, in addition to earning an exciting 9-8 win over Kyle Cowan of Penn.  His two losses of the tournament came against Zach Rey of Lehigh who was ranked No. 1 in the country, and fourth-ranked Dominick Russon of Rutgers.

For the season, Civan holds a 21-11 record and will make his second straight trip to the NCAA Championships after qualifying last year as well.  He was named a second team All-Ivy League honoree after going 4-1 in conference matches.  Lester has a team-high 26 wins and eight pins so far this season, and was a unanimous first team All-Ivy League selection after going a perfect 5-0 in conference duals.
