CLEVELAND, OHIO - Though the 2010-11 wrestling season has come to a close, a number of the Lions have switched gears to compete in Greco Roman and Freestyle tournaments in the off-season.  Twelve Columbia wrestlers will compete at the FILA Junior Nationals this weekend in Cleveland, Ohio, April 7-10.

On Thursday, April 7, five Lions took part in the ASICS FILA Junior Nationals in the Greco Roman tournament, with four of them earning All-American honors.  Robert Dyar led the pack with a second place finish at 55KG.  Matt Bystol and Tyler Sheridan both took third at 63KG and 74KG, respectively, and Stephen West placed sixth overall at 84KG.  Josh Houldsworth also competed in the tournament.

"I'm real proud of the way our guys have competed this weekend," said assistant coach Carl Fronhofer.  "To be able to compete in the off-season on a national level will be great preparation for next year's collegiate season.  Their commitment to the process has been tremendous."

Those five Columbia wrestlers were joined by seven of their teammates on Sunday, April 10 to compete in the FILA Junior Nationals in Freestyle.  Steve Santos was the top finisher for Columbia as he placed seventh at 70 KG.

"Steve wrestled well," said Fronhofer.  "We are expecting him to get a good summer of training in and are confident that he will make a major impact next season on the national level."

Columbia assistant coach Hudson Taylor also returned to the mat that weekend.  Taylor competed in the 2011 US Open Wrestling National Championships which also took place in Cleveland, Ohio, at the Public Hall.
