NEW YORK -- Steve Santos, Eren Civan, Shane Hughes and Kevin Lester notched pins and Matt Bystol triumphed in a second sudden victory as the Columbia wrestling team followed up its 34-4 win over Brown with a 30-12 victory over Harvard on Saturday at University Gymnasium.

Columbia (8-4, 3-2 Ivy League, 4-3 EIWA) got off to a good start when junior Robert Dyar (15-16) opened the conference match with a 10-5 win over Max Mejia. Dyar took command early when he had two takedowns and a two-point near fall to build a 6-1 lead in the first period. He had two key reversals the rest of the way to stay in control.

Senior captain Kyle Gilchrist (24-11) wrestled tough against No. 12 Steven Keith at 133, but Keith pulled away with a 5-0 win to even team scores at 3-3.

Bystol’s thriller at 141 turned the match in Columbia’s favor. The Lions sophomore and the Crimson’s Shay Warren each had an escape in regulation to force extra periods. In the second SV period, Bystol (20-14) used a takedown to earn the win.

At 149, Santos (19-6) had control over Patrick Hogan well into the third period with an 8-0 lead but a sudden surge led to a pin. The time elapsed was 5:34.

The Crimson climbed to within 12-6 when No. 7 Walter Peppelman defeated junior Jake O’Hara (25-11), 5-0.

Senior 165-pouder Eren Civan (8-9) re-established a two-bout lead over Harvard, breaking a 2-2 tie by pinning Ian Roy in the third period. The elapsed time was 6:44. Columbia’s lead was pushed to 18-6.

Harvard’s Josh Popple edged Stephen West (28-11) at 174 by a score of 5-2 to bring the Crimson to within 18-9.

Hughes (20-9) played clincher once again for Columbia, pinning Bryan Panzano 2:22 to give the Lions a 24-9 advantage.

After James Fox earned a 4-2 win over Nick Mills (11-13) at 197, Columbia senior captain and heavyweight Kevin Lester (27-9) pinned David Ng in 24 seconds.

The Lions will close their dual season on Sunday when they host No. 24 Hofstra and celebrate Senior Day.
