Six Columbia Wrestlers Earn All-Ivy League Honors; West Tabbed Unanimous First Team

PRINCETON, N.J. – Six Columbia wrestlers garnered All-Ivy League honors as announced by the conference office on Monday. Junior Stephen West was a unanimous first team selection at 174 pounds and junior Steve Santos earned a spot on the first team at 149 pounds.

First-year Shane Hughes was tabbed for the All-Ivy League second team at 184 pounds. Seniors Kyle Gilchrist (133) and Kevin Lester (285) and junior Robert Dyar (125) were named honorable mentions.

West is 29-11 on the year and went 4-1 in Ivy League bouts. The Fresno, Calif., native is enjoying a banner year. His 29 wins this year leads the team and ties his career total entering this season. West was recently ranked the No. 32 wrestler at 174 pounds in the nation by the NCAA Division I Coaches’ Panel.

Santos has received All-Ivy League honors in back-to-back seasons as he was a second-team pick in 2011. The junior has compiled a 19-7 record this year, including a 4-1 mark in Ivy League matches and an 11-2 dual record. The NCAA Division I Coaches’ Panel ranks Santos as the No. 23 149-pounder in the nation.

Hughes is having a banner year going 20-10. He is 12-6 at 184 since switching from 197 and he went a perfect 5-0 in Ivy League bouts. Three of his five conference victories were by pin. Hughes’ 11 wins by fall this year are tied for the team lead.

Gilchrist earns All-Ivy League honorable mention accolades fro a second-straight season. The senior captain is 24-12 and went 3-2 in Ivy League matches. The NCAA Division I Coaches’ Panel regards him as the nation’s 30th-best wrestler at 133 pounds.

Lester is a four-time All-Ivy League selection. He was a unanimous first team selection in 2010-11, a second team pick in 2009-10 and an honorable mention in 2006-07. The team captain stands second on the team in wins with a 27-10 overall record. He went 3-2 in Ivy League action. Lester’s 11 pins are tied with Hughes for the most on the team. The NCAA Division I Coaches’ Panel ranks him as the 27th-best heavyweight in the nation.

Dyar is a first-time All-Ivy League selection. The junior 125-pounder is 15-17 on the year and went 3-2 in Ivy League bouts. Dyar’s 15 wins tie his career total entering the season.
