Lester, O'Hara, Santos Conclude Seasons With Wins On Day 2 At NCAA Championships
ST. LOUIS -- All three of Columbia’s wrestlers in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships notched impressive wins on Friday and junior Steve Santos fell one victory shy of earning All-American status.
Columbia concluded its 2011-12 season in 45th place as it scored six team points.
Santos (26-11) had a pair of wins on Friday, first shutting down ninth-seeded David Habat of Edinboro, 7-0, to advance and avenge an early-season loss to Habat. Santos followed that with a 5-4 win over Missouri’s Kyle Bradley.
Santos came within one win of finishing in the top eight, which would have earned him All-American status. Against Nick Lester of Oklahoma, Santos wrestled a tight match, but came up short in a 5-0 loss.
Jake O'Hara (30-16) defeated David Bonin of Northern Iowa in a thrilling 6-4 OT bout to start the day to earn his 30th win of the season. In his next match, O’Hara faced No. 12 Steven Monk of North Dakota State but lost in a 12-0 major decision.
Kevin Lester (32-13) faced Cornell’s Maciej Jochym in the wrestlebacks for the fifth time this season and dominated en route to a 9-2 victory. In his second bout of the day, Lester held his own against No. 9 seed Levi Cooper of Arizona State, but fell, 5-2.
