Wrestling Returns to the Mats November 9
NEW YORK – Carl Fronhofer, the Andrew F. Barth Head Coach of Wrestling, has announced the schedule for the 2013-14 season. The Lions will host five dual matches at the University Gym, as well as compete in three early season tournaments.
The season will open on Saturday, Nov. 9 with a trip to East Lansing, Mich. to compete in the Michigan State Open. Columbia had five grapplers place, including three draw winners, at last season’s event.
Two weeks later on Sunday, Nov. 24, the Lions head to Ithaca, N.Y. to battle in the New York State Championships, a tournament they took second in a year ago. The Northeast Duals await Columbia on Nov. 30, before taking a month off from competition.
The 2013 calendar year ends with a trip to Northwestern to compete in the 51st Midlands Championships where the Lions will get to go head-to-head with some of best competition in Division I wrestling.
After returning to the East Coast, the bulk of the dual slate begins with a visit to Piscataway, N.J. to wrestle Rutgers. The Lions host their first of five home duals on Friday, Jan. 10 with new EIWA member Binghamton traveling to the City of New York for a 7 p.m. match.
Columbia remains at home the following week, hosting Buffalo on Jan. 17, before heading to the nation’s capital to face Gardner Webb and American on Jan. 19. For the third straight Friday in January, the Lions will be in the friendly confines of the University Gym, this time welcoming Bucknell on Jan. 24.
The Ivy League slate closes out the regular season in February. Columbia heads out on the road to challenge Cornell (Feb. 8), Princeton (Feb. 14) and Penn (Feb. 1), before wrapping up the season with home duals against Harvard (Feb. 21) and Brown (Feb. 23).
Postseason wrestling commences on Sat., March 8 with the two-day EIWA Championships in Philadelphia. The season comes to a close with the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla. from March 20-22.
