NEW YORK – Columbia cross country and track & field alum Lisa Stublic '06CC qualified for the 2012 Olympics Sunday, as she finished the Berlin marathon in 2:33.42. That time, good for ninth overall, beat the Olympic ‘A’ standard by more than three seconds, and it was announced that she will represent Croatia in the 2012 Olympics in London.

Stublic moved to Croatia three years ago. Her father is a native, originally from the Sisak area of Croatia, while her mother is American.

Stublic has made history, as Croatia’s first-ever female Olympic marathon runner. Her time also set a new Croatian record by six minutes. She now holds Croatian records in the 3000m steeplechase, the 500m, the half-marathon and the marathon.

Stublic told the Croatian Times:

“When I saw the result, I thought that I was dreaming. This was my firth marathon in my life and regardless of the fact that we prepared well, I did not expect such a good result. I wanted to come to my father’s homeland and when I saw the methods of training of my current coach Slavko Petrovic, I was so excited that I stayed. And I am not sorry.”

Stublic was one of the best distance runners to come out of the Columbia Athletics program. She was a member of the women’s cross country team that dominated the Ivy League for four years, winning championship titles each of the four years Stublic competed.

She qualified for the NCAA Nationals in cross country each of her four years, earning All-American honors once. A two-time first-team All Ivy League honoree in cross country, Stublic also qualified for the NCAA finals in the 3000m steeplechase her senior year, coming in tenth in the nation.

In 2005, Stublic ran 17:10 at the Heps Cross Country Championships, which remains one of the 10 fastest times ever at Heps.

Complete marathon results are available here, the Croatian Times article is available here, and Stublic's accomplishment was also featured on HepsTrack.com.
