Men's Cross Country Jumps to No. 8 In National Polls

Big Moves by Ivy League’s Columbia Men

NEW ORLEANS - On Tuesday, Oct. 8 the Columbia men's cross country team climbed 22 spots to No. 8 in the latest USTFCCCA Division I Men's Cross Country National Rankings, to earn its highest ranking in program history. With an No. 8 national ranking, Columbia stands atop in the Ivy League, and surpasses its previous program best ranking of No. 10 in last year´s national poll.

After only its second race of the season, the Lions have caught the nation´s eye as one of the best teams in country after a phenomenal win at the Notre Dame Invitational. 

"This was probably the greatest win in the history of our programs, " said Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Coach Willy Wood.

The Lions also grabbed the No. 1 overall ranking in the latest USTFCCCA Northeast Regional Poll. After coming in at No. 4 in last week´s poll, Columbia climbed four spots to surpass Iona, Providence and previous top ranked Syracuse.

The Notre Dame Invitational ran a field of 28 teams that featured eight of the nation's top-30 ranked opponents in the latest USTFCCCA National Poll. The Lions showed its remarkable strength as they defeated ranked opponents No. 16 Colorado State, No. 21 New Mexico, No. 22 Notre Dame, No. 24 Virginia, No. 26 Florida State and top-10 programs No. 7 Tulsa and No. 9 Princeton en route to the win.

On Friday, October 11, Columbia will compete in the Metropolitan Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park at 1:30 p.m., the site of this year´s NCAA Cross Country Northeast Regional.
