TULSA, Okla. - Columbia men's tennis player Ashok Narayana won his opening round match at the ITA All-American Championships Monday to advance to Tuesday's round of 64.
The sophomore from Houston, Texas won a tough three-set match against Mark Kovacs from Purdue, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, Monday in the round of 128 of the qualifying draw. Kavocs has played primarily as Purdue's No. 1 singles player and as Hungary's top junior was ranked in the top-100 of the ITF junior rankings.
Narayana's round of 64 opponent will be Texas A&M's Shane Vinsant. Visnat won his first match of the tournament in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, over Brigham Young's Patrick Kawka.
Winston Lin was also action in the qualifying draw, but the 95thranked player in the nation fell to the 69th-ranked Spenser Wolf from Northwestern, 6-1, 7-6(4).
