ORLANDO, Fla. - A pair of first-year Columbia men's tennis players, Eric Rubin and Dragos Ignat, competed at the USTA Clay Court Invitational hosted Florida State this weekend. Both Rubin and Ignat will return to New York win quality victories in hand.
In his first match of the tournament, Ignat took down the fourth-seed, Panav Jha, in three sets, 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-0, to advance to the Gold Draw round of 16. Jha, a sophomore at Kentucky, entered the season ranked 64th in the nation in the ITA preseason poll.
Eric Rubin notched a pair of wins in the consolation bracket of the Garnet Draw. Rubin captured a three set, 7-5, 6-7(4), 10-4, victory over Luke Johnson from Florida Saturday and then followed it up with a straight set, 7-5, 6-1, toppling of FSU's Andres Bucaro. A season ago, Bucaro went 18-4 as the Seminoles No. 3 player in the tough ACC.
