NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Columbia men's tennis standout Winston Lin became the 2013 Northeast Regional ITA Singles Champion on Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Yale University with a gutsy come-from-behind victory over Harvard's Denis Nguyen.
No. 54-ranked Lin earned the victory over Nguyen by coming back from a 3-6 first set loss with 6-3, 6-1 wins in the next two sets.
After beginning the tournament with a first round bye, Lin went on to defeat six Ivy League opponents to win the title.
Lin opened action in the second round with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lucas da Silveira of Brown, and continued his success with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat over Zach McCourt of Princeton. In the fourth round, Lin battled it out with Jason Luu of Cornell, easily winning 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals, where he downed his second straight Cornell opponent, Chris Vrabel, 6-2, 6-0. In the semifinal round, Lin faced yet another Big Red foe, coming out on top by scores of 6-4, 6-4 over Sam Fleck to earn a spot in the finals.
Also playing strong in singles action was Max Schnur, who joined Lin in the semifinal round. Schnur knocked out teammate Dragos Ignat in the quarterfinals, 6-5, 6-3 to advance to the semis before ultimately falling to Harvard’s Nguyen.
The singles title earns Lin an automatic entry into the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 7-10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
