NEW YORK - The No. 40 Columbia men’s tennis team claimed the ECAC Indoor Championship on Monday, Feb. 17 against No. 24 Harvard, 4-0.
The Lions got off to a quick start taking the doubles point and 1-0 lead, taking the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches. Winston Lin and Mike Vermeer won the No. 2 match, 6-3, against Harvard’s Brian Yeung and Nicky Hu. Dragos Ignat and Richard Pham wrapped up shortly after, claiming the doubles point for the Lions, taking down Christo Schultz and Sebastian Beltrame, 6-4.
The Lions continued to surge ahead in the singles competition, taking the necessary three matches to secure the win and the title. Ashok Narayana took the No. 3 match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Vermeer put the Lions up 3-0 taking the No. 6 match against Hu, 6-3, 6-2. Bert Vancura claimed the third and final match point for the Lions in his straight set victory over Andrew Ball, 6-1, 6-4.
The Lions are back in the Dick Savitt Tennis Center on Sunday, March 2nd against Middle Tennessee State at 2 p.m.
