NEW YORK – The Columbia men’s tennis team closed the weekend with a 5-2 win over Penn at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center Sunday. Columbia swept the doubles point to take the early lead, and had the Quakers on the ropes throughout. With the win, the Lions are now 8-14 overall and 2-4 in the Ivy League.
In doubles, Columbia had a quick win to get things started. Junior Haig Schniederman and senior Sho Matsumoto paired up to beat the No.2 Penn duo, 8-3. Sophomore Cyril Bucher and senior Kevin Kung clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win in the No.3 spot, while sophomores John Yetimoglu and Nathaniel Gery made it a sweep of the doubles with an 8-4 win at No.1.
In singles, Gery repeated his success with a quick win over Ivan Turudic at No.3, 7-5, 6-0. But Penn wasn’t going down without a fight. In the No.1 singles spot, Hicham Laalej beat Columbia’s Schneiderman, 6-2, 6-2, and Nikola Kocovic beat Yetimoglu at No. 4, 6-4, 6-4.
With the match tied up at 2-2, senior Kung had a win in the No.2 spot to put the Lions ahead for good. There, he beat Phil Law, 6-2, 6-4. And first year Tizian Bucher clinched the win as he beat Mark Milbrandt, 6-3, 7-5 at No.5. Junior Rajeev Deb-Sen ended the match on a positive note for the Lions, as he beat Zach Gorn at No.6, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7).
Columbia has one match remaining in the 2011 season, as the Lions will host Ivy League leaders Cornell, Saturday, April 23 at 2 p.m.
