NEW YORK - The Columbia men's tennis team dropped its final match of the 2011 season to Ivy League champions Cornell Saturday, 6-1. With the loss, the Lions finish the season 8-15 overall and 2-5 in the Ivy League.

Cornell took the lead early by sweeping the doubles point, even though the Lions fought tooth and nail. The first win of the day for the Big Red came at No.2 doubles, where junior Haig Schneiderman and senior Sho Matsumoto lost, 8-6. Sophomores Nathaniel Gery and John Yetimoglu were next to fall, as they lost in the No.1 spot, 8-5. At No.3, junior Rajeev Deb-Sen and senior Kevin Kung forced a tiebreaker, but fell in a tough battle, 9-8(7).

Cornell was up 1-0 heading into the singles match, but the momentum wasn’t clearly on the Big Red’s side. In fact, sophomore Gery leveled the field with a quick win in the No.3 singles spot. Gery dominated Mirza Klis, winning 6-2, 6-3, as most matches were just finishing up the first set. The score was tied 1-1 with Gery’s win, and the Lions were still in it.

Cornell took the lead  again 2-1, when Andy Gauthier beat Kung in the No.2 singles spot, 6-4, 6-3, and Cornell’s Evan Bernstein made it 3-1 as he beat first-year Tizian Bucher in the No.5 singles spot, 7-6, 6-2. Three matches were still battling it out when that match ended, and for a time, Columbia was still in the game. But sophomore Cyril Bucher fell at No.4 singles to Jeremy Feldman, 6-2, 6-4, and that clinched the fourth point for the Big Red.

Cornell would get a win at No.6, as Venkat Iyer beat Yetimoglu, 6-4, 7-5, and the Big Red got its final point in the No.1 singles spot, as Jonathan Jaklitsch beat Schneiderman in a tiebreaker. Schneiderman won the first set, 7-5, before dropping the second 6-4. In the tiebreaker, Schneiderman had match point twice, but couldn’t convert it, and ended up falling, 10-8 in the tiebreaker.

The match was the last of the season for Columbia men’s tennis, who finish the year 8-15 overall and 2-5 in the Ivy League.
