NEW YORK – The Columbia men’s tennis team dropped a tough match to local rival St. John’s Saturday, as the Lions fell to the Red Storm, 5-2. 

In doubles, Columbia lost all three matches to see St. John’s take the doubles point. Juniors Haig Schneiderman and Rajeev Deb-Sen fell in the No.3 spot, 8-5, while senior Kevin Kung and sophomore Nathaniel Gery lost at No.1, 8-5. And in the No.2 spot, Cyril Bucher and Tizian Bucher dropped their match, 8-6. 

Singles saw the Red Storm take three quick wins to clinch the team win. At No.3, Cyril Bucher fell to Mike Lampa, 6-2, 6-1, while Schneiderman lost in the No.1 spot to Stefan Bojic, 6-3, 6-2. And St. John’s Mischa Koran clinched the team victory in the No.6 singles spot, as he beat Deb-Sen, 6-4, 6-3. Kung also had a loss in the No.4 spot, as he dropped a three set battle to Milo Hauk, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. 

Columbia had two singles wins on the day. In the No.5 singles spot, first-year Tizian Bucher defeated Matty Najfeld, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, while Gery had a tough win over Gustav Kallen, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0. 

With the loss, the Lions are now 6-10 on the season, heading into the start of Ivy League play. Up first for Columbia is the northern tandem of Dartmouth and Harvard, whom the Lions will travel to play, Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2 at 2 p.m.
