Menís Tennis Continues to Roll with 5-2 Win over Southern Methodist
NEW YORK – The Columbia men’s tennis team continued to thrive on its spring break road trip, as the Lions beat Southern Methodist, 5-2, Wednesday in Dallas, Texas, to improve to 10-2 on the season.
Columbia had two wins to clinch the doubles point, and pulled out tough singles wins, including three that went to a third set, to take the win over the Mustangs.
In doubles, first-years Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur continued their dominance in the No.1 spot, as they beat SMU’s top duo handily. The Lions downed Gaston Cuadranti and Pablo Perez-Esnaola 8-3, to start the Columbia ball rolling. Juniors John Yetimoglu and Nathaniel Gery wrapped up the doubles point shortly after, as they beat Joseph Hattrup and Robert Sajovich, 8-6 in the No.3 spot. SMU got its lone win in the No.2 spot, as Arturs Kazijevs and Tobias Flood eked out a 9-8 win over Haig Schneiderman and Winston Lin.
Singles proved to be a battle for the Lions, as the Mustangs rallied back from being down 1-0. SMU got a win in the No.1 spot, where Cuadranti beat Schneiderman in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to tie the team score up at 1-1. The Mustangs also got a win in the No.3 spot, when Kazijevs beat Gery, 6-1, 7-5, to give SMU the 2-1 lead.
Yetimoglu was the first to help swing the momentum back in Columbia’s favor, beating Sajovich 7-6, 6-4 at No.6, tying the team match at 2-2. Narayana gave the Lions the edge with his win at No.4, defeating Flood after a first set loss, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. First-year Bert Vancura made it 4-2, clinching the match for the Lions with his 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 win over Mischa Nowicki in the No.5 spot, and Lin finished the match in style, beating Perez-Esnaola at No.2, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, to make it 5-2 Lions.
Up next for Columbia is a match against Texas-Arlington, Friday, March 16 at 3 p.m.
