Michelle Piyapattra, Winston Lin Named Columbia's Student-Athletes of the Month for April

NEW YORK – Sophomore women’s golf star Michelle Piyapattra and first-year men’s tennis sensation Winston Lin achieved historic feats for Columbia in April. In recognition for their outstanding performances, Piyapattra and Lin have been named Columbia’s Student-Athletes of the Month for April.

Piyapattra was named the Ivy League Player of the Year on April 29 following the Ivy League Women’s Golf Championship at Seaview Bay Course (Galloway, N.J.). So far this season, she has an Ivy League-best 74.52 round average and two tournament victories. Piyapattra currently ranks 73rd in the nation in the Golfstat Cup rankings. She will next compete in the NCAA East Regional on May 10-12 at Penn State’s Blue Course, marking the first time a Columbia Lion will compete at NCAA regionals since the 2007 squad qualified as a team.

In the month of April, Piyapattra had two impressive showings. She shot 75-69—144 (E) to win Columbia’s 6th Annual ROAR-EE Invitational, held April 13-14 at Spook Rock Golf Course (Suffern, N.Y.). Her even-par 144 was her best tournament par score of her Lions career. At the Ivy League Women’s Golf Championship, Piyapattra took fourth place with a 20-over 233 and earned First Team All-Ivy League honors for the second straight year.

Lin has enjoyed a breakout season on the tennis court , earning Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors. He was a perfect 6-0 in the month of April. Lin finished the regular season with a 21-1 singles record playing at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles spots, including 7-0 mark in the Ivy League.

Lin also posted a 10-3 doubles record with partner Haig Schneiderman, including a 5-2 Ivy League record at No. 2 doubles. He helped lead the team to a No. 42 national ranking and the team’s first at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament in 14 years.
