Men's Tennis Eliminated at NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships
ATHENS, Ga. – Thursday was a tough day for the Columbia men's tennis program, as singles player Winston Lin was eliminated in the second round, while the doubles tandem of Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur dropped their opening round match. Both matches needed three sets to be decided.
Junior men’s tennis player Winston Lin dropped his second round match at the NCAA Singles Championship to Vanderbilt’s Gonzales Austin Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Ga.
In a rematch of the No. 1 match from the May 11 meeting of Columbia at Vanderbilt in the NCAA Tournament, Lin took the early lead on his opponent, winning the opening set, 7-6. Austin fought back though, evening the match with a 6-3 score in the second set. In the decisive set, Austin fed off his momentum from the second set and took the third, 6-2, advancing him to the Round of 16 on Friday.
The doubles bracket of the NCAA Championships kicked off Thursday with first round matchups in the afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Center. Columbia top ranked duo of Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur engaged in a back-and-forth match with Pepperdine's Francis Alcantara and Alex Sarkissian, but it would be the pairing from Califorinia that came out on top.
Alcantara and Sarkissian edged Columbia in the first set, 6-3, but Narayana and Schnur fired back in a strong way, capturing the second set by a 6-1 score. Unfortunately, the final set turned out to go in the favor of Alcantara and Sarkissian, 6-1.
