Lacrosse Posts Senior Day Win Over Manhattan, 15-5
NEW YORK - With a 3-3 tie at the break to the visiting Manhattan Jaspers, the Columbia lacrosse offense caught fire in second half scoring four straight goals in the opening three minutes to jump out to a commanding lead. The Lions would never trail in the game and behind hat tricks from Katie Angulo (4), Kacie Johnson and Kelly Buechel, Columbia captured a 15-5 victory in its final home game of the season on Friday, April 26.
Before the opening draw, Columbia honored seniors Kelly Buechel and Kacie Johnson. Johnson put together a fantastic final home performance with a game-high six points, including three goals and three assists.
The Lions offense struggled to find its grove in the first half, however the defense remained strong. First-year Colleen Packer posted seven saves in the net and the team collectively forced 11 Jasper turnovers. The Class of 2013 carried the first half scoring with Johnson and Buechel both scoring goals. Johnson also tallied an assist when Katie Angulo found the back of the net.
Columbia dominated the second half scoring eight unanswered goals through thirteen minutes of play. At 17:06, the Lions led 11-4 after Johnson scored her third goal of the game. In the big run, Johnson, Buechel, Angulo and Paige Cuscovitch each found the back of the net twice.
The Jaspers were held to just two second half goals, both scored by Caitlin Haynes. The Lions saw seven players score at Columbia Soccer Stadium, including Ashley Rinere, Charlotte Cipolletti and Allison Hoffman. Off the Johnson assist, Hoffman scored the final goal of the game to secure the 15-5 victory and the Lions improve to 3-11 on the season. With her third assists of the game, Johnson tied Marisa Marcellino (‘08CC) as the all-time career assists leader with 87.
