PRINCETON, N.J. - In its final Ivy League contet of the season, the Columbia lacrosse team dropped an 18-10 game to No. 15 Princeton on Wednesday, April 27. The Lions fell into an early hole and were unable to claw their way out.
Taylor Gattinella paced Columbia with four points on three goals and an assist, Olivia Mann had a hat trick, Kacie Johnson and Gabrielle Geronimos each added a pair of goals, and Karlee Blank finished with six saves in goal.
The first half was a high-scoring affair. Ten minutes in, Princeton led 5-0 before Geronimos got the Lions on the board with an unassisted goal after 11:59 of elapsed time. The Tigers' Barb Previ answered back with a three-goal run to push the home team's lead to 8-1 with 12:15 to play.
Columbia scored five of the next seven to pull within four with 5:20 remaining in the half. Sophomores Johnson and Mann scored a pair of goals 20 seconds apart to get things going for the Lions. The duo scored again, this time a minute apart, and Gattinella added a goal of her own during that stretch to trail 10-6.
The momentum swung back to the Tigers, however, as they scored seven of the next eight, including two to close out the first half. Gattinella had the lone Columbia goal during that span as Princeton took their largest lead of the game with 13:48 to go in the second half.
Columbia managed to cut into that deficit on three straight goals by Geronimos, Gattinella and Mann, but a Princeton goal with 2:28 to play brought the final score to 18-10 in favor of the Tigers.
Both teams won 15 draws a piece, Columbia outshot Princeton 33-28, but the Tigers held a slim 18-16 advantage in ground balls.
Eight different Columbia players had a caused turnover while Kelly Buechel had a game-high six draw controls.
Columbia (4-10, 1-6 Ivy League) will close out the 2011 season on Saturday, April 30 on the road at Binghamtom.
