NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On a sunny afternoon at Yale, the Columbia women’s lacrosse team traveled to the Bulldogs on Saturday, April 12 looking for its first Ivy League win of the season. The Lions gave Yale all they could handle, including a strong second-half charge led by a hat rick from Paige Cuscovitch.

The Bulldogs began its attack with a five-goal spurt in the first half. Yale’s Jen Devito highlighted the offense with two goals to lead scores from three different players. The Lions were held scoreless for 28 minutes, but first-year Taylor Quinn ended the drought capitalizing with a free-position goal at 2:40. Despite leading the draw control count 6-1, Columbia went into the break trailing 5-1.

Just like they’ve done all year, the Lion’s fight jumped up a notch in the second-half. The Bulldogs opened the half with a pair of goals to take a 7-1 lead at 29:11 to give Columbia its largest deficit of the game. Paige Cuscovitch responded with a goal at 27:38 to spark a fierce Columbia run.

The captain stepped up to score three straight goals in less than four minutes to grab some early offensive momentum. Jessie Ambrose added to charge for the Lions fourth unanswered goal at 20:18 to trim the Lion’s largest deficit in half at 8-5.

Yale kept the Lions at bay with a score at 12:50. However, Quinn responded with a tough score from the right side, for her second goal, to keep the Lions going at 6:20 to trail only 9-6.

The Bulldogs would hold on in the final minutes to escape the Lions 9-6. Columbia dropped to 3-7 overall and 0-5 in the Ivy League. Despite the loss, goalkeeper Colleen Packer made a season-high eight saves, including seven in the second half.

Columbia will be back in action on Wednesday, April 19 on the road at Albany for a 3 p.m. game.
