Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

NEW YORK – The Columbia baseball team kicked off its 2013 Ivy League slate in convincing fashion with a doubleheader sweep of Harvard on Friday at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

The Lions (9-12) shutout the Crimson (3-18) 5-0 in the first game of the day behind the strong arm of junior David Speer, who pitched a complete seven-inning, four-hit gem with six strikeouts.

The second game was a tight battle throughout but Columbia finished off a 3-2 win in the bottom of the ninth thanks to the heroics of Gus Craig, who knocked in the winning run with a walk-off RBI single.

Game 1 Recap:

Columbia’s bats were hot in game one as Speer dominated on the hill to complete the shutout.

The Lions got on the board with a three-run fourth inning to take its first lead of the day.

Alex Black drew a walk and advanced to second after Joey Falcone singled up the middle. Nick Ferraresi then reached first on a fielder's choice to load the bases. The scoring began as Aaron Silbar knocked in a two-run RBI to send Falcone home while Black scored on a third base throwing error. Silbar kept momentum rolling as he stole second, and Vandercook once again loaded the bases after he was hit by a pitch.

An RBI sacrifice fly to center field by Mike Fischer sent Ferraresi to the plate to put the Lions ahead, 3-0.

Falcone put the exclamation point on the game in the fifth with a two-run home run, his first of the season to make it a 5-0 Columbia advantage the rest of the way.

Sam Dodge took the loss for the Crimson despite also throwing a complete game as he let up five runs on five hits with six strikeouts on the day.

Game 2 Recap:

Columbia went ahead first in the second game in what would be a neck-and-neck battle until the end.

Jordan Serena got things started in the third frame, reaching base after he was hit by a pitch, and stole second to get into scoring position early.

Eric Williams then took advantage with an RBI single to center field to make it 1-0, Columbia.

The Lions doubled their lead in the fourth after Ferraresi cranked a leadoff double and eventually scored thanks to an RBI single by Vandercook.

Harvard answered in the top of the fifth with its first run of the day after Tanner Anderson hit an RBI single with the bases loaded to score Nick Saathoff.

The Crimson knotted the score at 2-all in the sixth as Mike Martin doubled and advanced to third on a fielding error by Williams. Brandon Kregel then singled to right field to score Martin and get the Crimson on the board.

Vandercook hit a leadoff single to begin a bottom of the ninth rally for the Lion
