Columbia's Tim Giel Named to Cape Cod League All-Star Team
BOURNE, Mass. - Columbia rising senior right-handed pitcher Tim Giel was named to the Cape Cod League All-Star Team over the weekend, announced by the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Giel, who has posted a 0.84 earned run average in 21 1/3 innings pitched with the Bourne Braves this season, is thought to be the first Columbia baseball player to be selected to the Cape Cod League All-Star Game. He is the only Ivy League player to be named to the team this season.
Giel started the season on a temporary contract but impressed early. “My first goal was to get a full contract,” Giel told Eddie Lockhart of BourneBraves.com. “I was pitching well and it was my main goal this summer to make the all-star team…[it] gives [me] a little something extra to prove, not [being one of] these big school guys.”
In 21 1/3 innings pitched, Giel has totaled 21 strikeouts and has walked just six batters. He also has earned one save. In nine starts during the 2012 season for Columbia, Giel pitched to a 3.83 ERA, struck out 34 and held batters to a .268 batting average.
The Cape Cod League All-Star Game will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Massachusetts. The game will be televised live by Fox College Sports - Atlantic.
