NEW YORK – Gathered together in the Milstein Hospitality Pavilion of The Campbell Sports Center on Monday, the Columbia Lions roared when they discovered they would be heading to Fullerton, Calif. for the regional round of the 2013 NCAA Baseball Championships.

Columbia will take on host Cal State Fullerton in the opening round on Friday, May 31 at 11 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on ESPNU. Also in the Fullerton Region are New Mexico (37-20) and Arizona State (35-20-1) who will play at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Lions garnered the Ivy League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championship with a doubleheader sweep of Dartmouth on May 4 at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium. The Ivy League title put the exclamation point on the most successful season in Columbia baseball history.

The Lions posted the most conference wins in a single season this year, racking up 16 Ivy League wins. A total of nine student-athletes were selected to All-Ivy League teams, headlined by first-teamers Jordan Serena, Aaron Silbar and David Speer. Seniors Alex Black (second team) and Tim Giel (honorable mention) garnered their second All-Ivy League selections. Sophomore second-team selection Joey Falcone was also named a finalist for the inaugural Gregg Olson Award, honoring college baseball’s breakout player of the year.

Similar to Columbia, Cal State Fullerton enters the regional on a seven-game win streak. The Titans picked up the No. 5 overall seed in the 64-team tournament after capturing the 27th conference title in program history, including their fourth straight Big West title, going 48-8, 23-4 Big West on the year.

Fullerton is hosting a NCAA Baseball Regional for the 11th time. Goodwin Field, the current home venue for the Titans, is hosting its 10 regional round since 2000.

The Lions are making their third appearance in program history in the NCAA Tournament. Columbia made its first NCAA Regional in 1976, participating in the Northeast Regional in Middletown, Conn. The Lions lost their first two games, falling to Temple, 6-2, and St. John’s, 10-2.

Columbia returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008, traveling to Conway, S.C. that year. The Lions opened the tournament against host Coastal Carolina, dropping a 10-2 decision. East Carolina then topped Columbia, 9-0.
