Baseball's Incoming Class of 2015 Joins Columbia Squad

NEW YORK - Nine newcomers, from all across the country, will join Columbia's baseball squad for the 2012 season, it was announced recently.

The group hails from eight states, from as close as Brooklyn and as far away as Oregon.  There are four position players, three pitchers and a pair of two-way players that will bolster the Columbia squad in 2012.

Gus Craig - OF/LHP - L/L - 6-2 - 215 - Eugene, Ore. - South Eugene
Head coach Brett Boretti on Craig: "Gus is a big, powerful lefty hitter who has a lot of athleticism and strength. His arm strength will also allow him to work on the hill for the Lions."

Cory Osetkowski - RHP - R/R - 6-10 - 265 - Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. - Canyon Crest
Boretti: "Cory is a two-sport athlete who excelled in both sports in high school.  He is coming to Columbia to play basketball and baseball."

Robb Paller - OF - L/R - 5-10 - 180 - Brooklyn, N.Y. - Berkeley Carroll
Boretti: "We feel Robb can make an impact with the bat as a freshman.  He's a good runner who will compete for a spot in the outfield."

Jordan Serena - SS - R/R - 6-1 - 175 - Parker, Colo. - Chaparral
Boretti: "Jordan is an excellent athlete and player who can play multiple positions. He will bring a lot of speed and versatility to the team."

David Spinosa - RHP - R/R - 6-0 - 185 - Charlottesville, Va. - St. Anne's-Belfield
Boretti: "David is a very talented and hard throwing right-hander who will compete for weekend innings immediately. He has a very bright future. David's father (class of 1978) also played football at Columbia."

George Thanopoulos - RHP/OF - R/R - 6-1 - 190 - Highland, Calif. - Redlands East Valley
Boretti: "George is a two-way talent who has a high ceiling on the hill but also possesses a powerful bat that will have him competing for an outfield spot as well."

David Vandercook - 3B - L/R - 6-1 - 195 - Boca Raton, Fla. - West Boca Raton
Boretti: "David possesses a solid lefty stick that will bring pop to the lineup.  He was a member of the Florida State Championship team at West Boca."

Mike Weisman - LHP - L/L - 6-0 - 190 - North Andover, Mass. - North Andover
Boretti: "Mike is a three-pitch pitcher who had a tremendous high school career.  He knows how to win and is a quality lefty who we will rely on more and more as the season progresses."

Justin Wong - 2B/SS - R/R - 6-0 - 185 - Austin, Texas - St. Stephen's Episcopal
Boretti: "Justin is a very good hitting middle infielder who is a plus runner. He will be competing for a spot as a freshman."
