PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior centerfielder Jordan Serena and senior pitcher David Speer have been recognized by the Ivy League office for their stellar performances during opening weekend of the season at South Florida. Serena was named Co-Player of the Week, while Speer received the Pitcher of the Week nod.

Serena had an outstanding weekend at the dish, knocking nine hits in 16 at bats, including three doubles. His on-base percentage stands at .611 through four games, adding a walk and a hit by pitch to his stat sheet. Of the Lions’ 14 runs scored over the weekend, six of them came when Serena crossed the plate. He also continued to show his speed on the base paths, swiping three bags. His sure-handed glove accounted for eight putouts and an assist without committing an error.

In the season-opener on Friday night, Speer came out on top in what turned into a strong pitcher’s duel. Over eight innings and 102 pitches, Speer stymied a USF offense that averaged 9.4 runs and 12.7 hits, keeping the Bulls off the scoreboard and giving up just five hits. He tallied eight strikeouts in the performance, propelling the Lions to a 1-0 victory, the first season-opening victory for Columbia since 2002.

Columbia is back in action this weekend with a four-game set at Kennesaw State beginning Friday.
