PRINCETON, N.J. – A standout week on the diamond has earned senior David Speer Ivy League Pitcher of the Week and junior Gus Craig Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.

Heading into the final weekend tied with Penn atop the Gehrig Division standings, Speer came out firing on all cylinders, blanking the Quakers, 6-0, for his second straight shutout, giving Columbia an early edge in the series. Speer finished the game with seven strikeouts, bringing his Ivy League total to 32 while allowing just one walk in five starts.

The award is Speer’s second of the year, having earned the first weekly honor of the season back on March 4.

A great deal of the run support for the Lions’ pitching staff last week came off the bat of Craig. After helping lead the Lions past Fordham midweek with three hits, including a rocket of home run, Craig continued his torrid hitting against Penn over the weekend. In five games, the junior batted .632 (12-of-19), knocked three doubles, a homer, drove in seven runs and scored four times.

Craig’s most significant contributions came in the regular season finale on Saturday. Needing to win the final game to force a one-game playoff for the Gehrig Division crown, Craig drove in Columbia first three RBI to lead the Lions to a 5-2 victory over the Quakers. A single in the first inning scored Robb Paller to tie the game at 1-1 and a two-RBI double in the fourth gave Columbia a 3-1 lead it would not relinquish.

Craig is the second Lion to be named Player of the Week, joining Jordan Serena who earned the award back on March 4.

In total, Columbia has earned eight weekly awards this season (three pitcher, two player and three rookie), the most since the 2010 season when the Lions earned 10 awards.
