BOX SCORE

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Columbia baseball team needed extra innings, but the Lions set a new standard for wins in a season, downing Bucknell for their 29th win of the year Saturday.

Similar to the rest of the series, Columbia got on the board first. The Lions aggressive base running led to the first run of the game, as Jordan Serena crossed home plate safely on a double steal.

Bucknell took the lead in the bottom of the second, posting a trio of runs to move ahead 3-1. Brett Smith, Anthont Gringerelli, and Joe Ogren each recorded RBI, pushing the Bison to a 3-1 lead.

The deficit shrunk to just one run in the fourth, as Mike Fischer picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Robb Paller was forced home as the Lions’ catcher was plunked, shrinking the deficit to just one run.

Errors proved to be fruitful for Columbia in the eighth, as a passed ball and two fielding errors led to the tying run crossing the plate. David Vandercook, who reached on a passed ball that would’ve been strike three, crossed the plate three batters later.

Following a scoreless ninth frame, Columbia took the lead in the top of the 10th. Serena kicked the inning off with a triple to right. He was able to come home in the next at bat on Vandercook’s sacrifice fly to center.

George Thanopoulos earned the save for Columbia, with a scoreless bottom of the 10th, clinching the Lions 29th victory. Serena and Vandercook led the Lions’ offense with two hits in four at bats.

Columbia now awaits Monday’s selection show to determine which regional site they will begin NCAA Championship action at.
