Baseball Falls to Liberty in Final Game of the Series

LYNCHBURG, Va.Columbia dropped the final game of the series to Liberty, 12-2. 

 

After a scoreless first inning, Liberty’s offense produced 10 runs on 13 hits over the next four innings.

 

Columbia got on the board in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs and cutting Liberty’s lead to 10-2.

 

With one out, Dan Neczypor and Mike Malfettone had back to back singles. Nick Cox reached on an error by Liberty’s third baseman, plating Neczypor and moving Malfettone to second. Jason Banos followed with an RBI single up the middle for the second run of the inning.

 

That would be all for the Lions.  The Flames added two runs in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

 

Offensively, Columbia was led by Jason Banos who went three for five from the plate with one run batted in, while Dean Forthun had two hits.

 

Bill Purdy (0-2) took the loss for Columbia going 4.2 innings, striking out two. Joey Mizzoni pitched 2.1 innings giving up two runs, and Jason Gustavson pitched one inning giving up no hits and striking out one.

 

Columbia (4-13) concluded their nine day spring break trip with a 4-5 record.

 

Columbia will face St. John’s in Queens, N.Y. on Tuesday, March 25, at 3 p.m. The Lions will then begin league play, hosting Brown and Yale, March 29-30.
