Columbia Releases 2011 Men's Soccer Schedule
NEW YORK -- The Columbia men's soccer team will take on seven teams that advanced to the 2010 NCAA Championship, as part of its 2011 fall schedule that was revealed by head coach Kevin Anderson on Monday. The Lions will open the season with a road match at Fairfield on Friday, Sept. 2, before beginning its home slate with a Sunday matinee against Sacred Heart on Sept. 4 at 3 p.m.
The team will remain home for its next match against Saint Peter's on Tuesday, Sept. 6. The Peacocks went 13-5-1 last season en route to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title and a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Columbia then travels out west for the Lobo Invitational, hosted by the University of New Mexico, on Sept. 9-11. The Lions take on the host team on Friday, Sept. 9, and concludes the tournament against Missouri State on Sept. 11. The host Lobos earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Lions return home for a match against local rival Fordham on Sept. 15, then travel to Delaware to take on the Blue Hens on Sunday, Sept. 18. The team closes out the month of September with matches against Monmouth (Sept. 22) and Seton Hall (Sept. 27). The Hawks finished the season ranked No. 25 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and made the NCAA Championship field for the second consecutive year.
Ivy League play opens at Columbia Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 1 against 2010 NCAA Championship participant Brown, who picked up two victories in the event to advance to the Sweet 16. The contest against the Bears will be the first of four straight matches against postseason participants from last season, and will also serve as Homecoming Day for the team.
The Lions continue their conference schedule the following weekend against Penn, who finished second in the Ivy League with a 5-2-0 record (13-6-0 overall) and defeated Bucknell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. A pair of road contests against reigning conference champion Princeton (Oct. 15) and Dartmouth (Oct. 22) follow over the next two weeks. The Tigers went through the Ivy League schedule a year ago with an undefeated 7-0-0 record.
After two straight matches away from home, Columbia returns to the City of New York for its final match of October against Yale on Oct. 29. The Lions will close out the season with a pair of road contests -- Adelphi (Nov. 1) and Cornell (Nov. 12) -- sandwiching its final home game against Harvard on Nov. 5.
