Shaban's Second-Half Header Lifts Men's Soccer Past Adelphi, 2-1
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. -- Senior defender Ronnie Shaban headed home a corner kick from junior Nick Scott to propel the Columbia men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Adelphi on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Lions even their record at 7-7-1 on the year heading into their final two matches of the regular season.
Columbia opened the scoring in the 24th minute, as Scott made a run up the left side and moved all the way to the touch line. The Newcastle, England product crossed the ball in front to sophomore Henning Sauerbier, who one-timed a shot past Panther goalkeeper Christopher Herrera to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The advantage would hold up until midway through the 2nd half, when Issa Tall pushed his way past the Columbia defense and scored the equalizer. The goal marked the third straight season in which Tall has scored against the Lions.
In the 77th minute, Columbia came right back to take the lead as Scott sent a corner kick far post. Shaban timed his run perfectly and converted on his diving header chance to put the Lions on top to stay.
Columbia outshot the Panthers for the match, 11-6, with Sauerbier and junior Will Stamatis leading the way with three shots apiece. Senior Zach Glubiak played the final 45 minutes in goal and picked up the win, his second of the season.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, Nov. 5 against Harvard at 4 p.m. The match will mark the final home contest for eight Columbia seniors: Francois Anderson, Alexander Aurrichio, Nick Faber, Zach Glubiak, Mike Mazzullo, Ronnie Shaban, Jesse Vella and Will Young.
