Menís Soccer Welcomes St. Peterís Wednesday
NEW YORK - The Columbia men's soccer team will host St. Peter's Wednesday evening in the third home match of the season for the Lions. Fans are encouraged to come out to the Columbia Soccer Stadium at the Baker Athletics Complex for the 7 p.m. matchup.
Columbia has played to a 1-3 record to open the season, with their lone win coming Sept. 5 at home against Manhattan. The Lions came away with a 2-0 win against the Jaspers, as Nick Scott and Quentin Grigsby each scored.
The Lions took on Monmouth over the weekend, falling to the Hawks 1-0. The Columbia defense held strong in facing 11 shots throughout the game, but the offense was unable to get one of their four attempts past the Monmouth keeper.
Freshman Kyle Jackson served as the Columbia keeper for the final 45 minutes of each of last week's matches, making six saves, while not allowing a goal. His solid play earned him Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors.
St. Peter's, a member of the MAAC, enters Wednesday's game with a 2-3 record. The Peacocks opened the season with a 3-1 road victory over Seton Hall, but have since lost three out of four. St. Peter's only other win came Sept. 4, a 3-2 defeat of Lehigh at home.
The Peacocks fell last week on the road to George Mason (5-1) and were then shutout by American (2-0). Noah Sadaoui tallied the only goal for St. Peter's during that two game stretch. Sadaoui paces his team with five goals on 27 shot attempts.
Carlos Suarez held down the goalkeeping duties for St. Peter's this season. The junior has made 24 saves, but has given up 12 goals for a 2.36 goals-against average.
The match against St. Peter's is the first of two straight home contests for Columbia. The Lions will host Delaware Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., before embarking on a four-game road match stint.
