BOX SCORE

STORRS, Conn. – Connecticut (6-2-4) scored a trio of goals in the opening half and would go on to defeat Columbia (5-3-2), 4-0, Tuesday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.

First-year Cyle Larin got the Huskies on the board in the 14th minute with his fourth strike of the season. Kwame Awuah dropped a pass to Edir DaGraca who then set up Larin for the goal and the early UConn advantage. The Huskies doubled their lead in the 28th minute when junior Allando Matheson slipped a shot into the back of the net off a Nicholas Zuniga pass.

The UConn lead improved to three goals six minutes later when Colin Bradley buried a penalty kick after a Columbia foul.

At the half, UConn held an 8-3 advantage in shots and had recorded the game’s only three corners to that point. Two of Columbia’s shot attempts came off the boot of Antonio Matarazzo, with Henning Sauerbier accounting for the third.

The first 20 minutes of play after the intermission passed without either team threatening, but the UConn attack came alive once again shortly thereafter. Larin sent a shot off the post in the 66th minute, setting the stage for Matheson’s second tally of the game in the 68th minute. Adria Beso laced a corner kick to the center of the box where Matheson directed the ball into the net for his fifth goal of the season, putting the Huskies up, 4-0.

Ron Zori registered the Lions first shot on net in the 75th minute, but Andre Blake stepped in front of it for the save. UConn had one final scoring chance in the 79th minute, but Luke Rossi, who came on in relief in goal for Columbia, made the save.

Columbia will look to bounce back Saturday when its visits Princeton for its third Ivy League contest of the season. Kick-off in New Jersey is slated for 4 p.m.
