Columbia Associate AD Jim Gossett Chosen to Assist at Super Bowl XLVII
NEW ORLEANS - Columbia Associate Athletics Director of Sports Medicine Jim Gossett will serve as one of two NFL Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) spotters during Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, Feb. 3.
Gossett's role will be to look for mechanisms of head and neck injury and inform the medical staffs on the sidelines of his observations. One of the most highly respected athletic trainers in the country, he has served as the Lions' head athletic trainer for 29 years and this year marks his 34th season working for Columbia.
This will not be Gossett's first time on the big stage. He has previously been named head athletic trainer for the United States fencing team in the 1991 World University Games in Sheffield, England, and spent three seasons as trainer of the U.S. National Lightweight Crew. He was also an athletic trainer for rowing at the 1988 Olympic Sports Festival, and for track & field at the 1987 Festival and Pan American Games. He also spent four summers as athletic trainer for the ABCD/Nike basketball camps.
Check back next week for a recap of Gossett's experience of the "Big Game" in the Big Easy.
