Football Concludes Season with Loss to Brown
NEW YORK – Brown running back John Spooney carried the ball 27 times for 186 yards on the ground and one touchdown, while also catching another, to lead the Bears past Columbia in season finale at Robert K. Kraft Field at Wien Stadium, 48-7, Saturday afternoon.
Columbia’s Alan Watson rushed for 61 yards, while sophomore Trevor McDonagh threw for 149 and a score. Patrick Donnelly completed 22-of-37 attempts for Brown, ending the game with 305 yards and four touchdowns.
Senior punter Paul Delaney launched nine punts for an average of 45 yards, placing four inside the 20. Delaney also had one punt for 54 yards, the longest of the game.
After the teams traded punts for the first five possessions of the first quarter, Spooney broke off a 45-yard run to the end zone that put the Bears up 7-0 at the 8:13 mark. Donnelly threw his first touchdown pass on Brown’s next drive, hitting Jordan Evans for a 13-yard strike with 5:45 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Bears added a field goal and a Spooney touchdown reception in the second quarter to carry a 24-0 advantage into the halftime break.
Following a Brown touchdown in the early portion of the third quarter, Columbia got on the board when McDonagh found Toure Douglas in the right side of the endzone for a 12-yard score with 11:54 left in the period.
Brown would add a trio of scores over the remaining 26 minutes to close out the game, 48-7.
Senior Brian East closed out his career with a season-high 18 tackles to finish the season with 84 takedowns, trailing only classmate Zach Olinger who had 14 vs. Brown, to end the year with 104. Sophomore Mark Cieslak added 10 tackles and a fumble recovery.
