In this special Tuesday Update, you will find changes to the Columbia Football Coaching Staff, and a few reminders about events coming up.
Times Are Changing
Pete Mangurian, Columbia’s Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football, has announced coaching staff changes.
“We look at every change as a chance to get better, to expand our knowledge and broaden our base when it comes to dealing with the players,” Mangurian said. “Broadening the collective knowledge and depth of our staff, as well as proven recruiting abilities are our primary concerns when building our staff.”
Gordon Sammis, the tight ends coach and assistant offensive line coach for the past two years, has been promoted to full-time offensive line coach.
Chad Nice, the running backs coach, has been delegated more responsibility and has been promoted to full-time.
Defensive Coordinator Chris Rippon will now coach the linebackers, while Special Teams Coordinator Matt Thurin will coach the secondary and special teams.
Jeff Smart will coach the linebackers and be the assistant special teams coach.
Ola Adams joins the staff from Cortland State to coach the wide receivers.
Jeff Smart served as Columbia’s Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning from July 2013 to January 2014. He was the defensive graduate assistant at his alma mater the University of Colorado, coaching the outside linebackers.
“Jeff Smart has been involved with our program since last summer. Jeff worked as Ryan Cidzik’s assistant all last year and understands our players and our system. Jeff brings a Division I mentality, having played linebacker at the University of Colorado,” Mangurian added. “He interacts well with our players and staff. He will work with Chris Rippon and the linebackers, as well as assist Matt Thurin with the special teams.”
Smart participated in rookie camp for the Cleveland Browns at linebacker in 2010. At Colorado, Smart was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter for the Buffalos, serving as captain as a senior. Smart was second team All-Big 12 as a junior, honorable mention as a sophomore and senior.
Ola Adams comes to Columbia from Cortland State, where he coached from 2009-2010, and again from 2011 to 2014. From 2011-2014 he was the team’s defensive coordinator.
“I believe Ola Adams will help us with his defensive knowledge and his proven recruiting background. During this process I found him to be a great communicator and an analytical thinker,” Mangurian said. “Our players and our offensive staff will benefit from his defensive expertise. I am comfortable with his transition to offense. I am convinced he is a great teacher and I believe that to be the most important quality when hiring a coach.”
Adams graduated from Concord University (W.V.) in 2008 and served as a student coach at the school in the fall of 2008. Adams was a four-year starting free safety for the Division II Mountain Lions from 2004-07. He earned All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) honors three times and was named All-Northeast Region twice.
