IVY LEAGUE PRESEASON TELECONFERENCE

NEW YORK and PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia men’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the Ivy League, as the conference unveiled the 2012-13 preseason poll on Thursday morning.

The Lions received 90 points and trailed Princeton, who was tabbed as the early favorite, and last year’s Ivy League Champion, Harvard. It is just the fourth time in school history Columbia has been selected third or higher in the poll, and the first time since being picked third prior to the 1992-93 season.

“I’m very excited about the prospects of our team," third year head coach Kyle Smith said during the league's preseason teleconference Thursday. "It’s year three for our staff and our players. We have a great group of seniors and we are very fortunate to have had a trip to Spain and Italy this summer. I think it really helped our team grow closer together and mature."

A total of 17 media members (two from each team and one national) took part in the voting process.

Smith’s squad is coming off a 15-15 record in 2011-12 and returns four starters, highlighted by All-Ivy League point guard Brian Barbour and one of the conference’s best rebounders in center Mark Cisco.

In addition, Columbia has announced a scheduling change. The Lions will host Haverford at Levien Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m. Columbia’s December 4 contest at Fairleigh Dickinson was recently cancelled due to scheduling conflicts.
