NEW YORK – Columbia University men’s basketball unveiled its complete 2014-15 schedule, as announced by head coach Kyle Smith this afternoon. The Lions will open up the season at Stony Brook on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., and will face off at Kentucky and Connecticut, who each reached the NCAA Championship game last year, in December.
“This schedule gives us some great opportunities to test ourselves early on and I am very happy about the quality of our opponents as a whole,” Smith said. “Going against teams like Kentucky and Connecticut will be big challenges, but it will also be a thrill for our players, and will make us a more seasoned team as we head into Ivy League play and for potential postseason matchups.”
The slate includes 28 games in total and Columbia will play nine of its 14 non-conference games at home, for a total of 16 in Levien Gymnasium. Last season, the Lions went 14-4 in front of their home fans, establishing a new Levien Gym record.
“The fact that we were able to secure nine home games during the non-conference portion is very exciting, especially considering the success we had there last season,” added Smith. “It’s also important to us to renew these local rivalries and face like-minded programs, so we are very excited about the schedule we were able to put together.”
The first game at Morningside Heights will be against intra-city rival Wagner on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
In addition, the Lions have three more games against fellow schools from the Empire State. Hofstra will come to town on Dec. 20 and a road matchup at St. Francis Brooklyn will be on Dec. 30 to wrap up 2014. Stony Brook will also pay a return visit to Levien Gym on Jan. 6.
After a trip to Lehigh on Nov. 23, the Lions open up a four-game home stand against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 25, followed by contests against 2013-14 NCAA Tournament participant American (Nov. 29), Loyola (Md.) (Dec. 2) and Bucknell (Dec. 6).
Columbia then heads to Lexington to square off against the Wildcats on Dec. 10 on ESPN2 for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
On Dec. 28, the stage is set for the Lions to take on the defending national champion Huskies on Monday, Dec. 22. Location (Gampel Pavilion or XL Center) and TV information will be announced at a later date.
The Lions will also face Colgate (Dec. 28) and Central Penn (Jan. 10) to round out their non-conference foes.
The 14-game tournament begins at Cornell on Jan. 17 before a five-game home swing commences against the Big Red (Jan. 24), Yale and Brown (Jan. 30-31) and Princeton and Penn on Feb. 6-7 to mark alumni weekend.
Columbia follows with back-to-back road weekends at Harvard and Dartmouth (Feb. 13-14) and Brown and Yale (Feb. 20-21). The Big Green and Harvard come to town on Feb. 27-28 for senior weekend and the Lions wrap up the regular season at Penn and Princeton (Mar. 6-7).
