NEW YORK -- Columbia senior women's basketball student-athlete Kathleen Barry has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team, it was announced on Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America. With the award, Barry becomes the first women's basketball player in Columbia history to be named an Academic All-American.
The top scorer and rebounder for the Lions this season, Barry is averaging 10.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and ranks second in the Ivy League in rebounding. The 5-10 guard/forward has also been a menace on defense in Ivy League play, recording a league-leading 29 steals in 10 conference games.
In the classroom, Barry is an economics/math and Spanish major and maintains a 3.99 GPA. She has been named to the Academic All-Ivy League team twice in her career.
Back on the court, the co-captain was named Ivy League Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Jan. 31 after recording a pair of double-doubles in Columbia's weekend series against Harvard and Dartmouth. On the season, Barry has notched six double-doubles and has reached double-figures in scoring 14 times.
An honorable mention All-Ivy League selection last year, the Valley Center, Calif. native ranks among the Lions’ top twenty all-time scoring and rebounding leaders. She also stands sixth all-time in steals with 140.
Barry is joined on the first team by UConn senior guard Maya Moore, Army senior forward Erin Anthony, Oregon junior forward Amanda Johnson and West Virginia senior guard Liz Repella. Moore was named Academic All-America of the Year in the University Division for the second straight season.
The Columbia women's basketball team hosts its final two contests at Levien Gymnasium this weekend against Penn and Princeton at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 26, Barry and fellow senior Lauren Dwyer will be honored in a brief ceremony for their four-year contributions to the program prior to tipoff.
