LIONS KICK OFF ROAD SWING AT ARMY

Columbia women's basketball hits the road to face Army as part of a three-game road swing.

LAST TIME OUT
The Lions led for part of the first half and trailed by just two points at halftime, but Morgan State pulled away for a 60-51 victory on Friday at the Hill Field House. After Morgan State took an early lead, a steal by Tyler Simpson helped Columbia stay in the game as Brittany Simmons hit a shot to make it 6-4 with 17:19 to go. Simmons, who scored Columbia's first seven points, continued to put Columbia on the board with an and-one at the 15:02 mark to bring Lions within one, 8-7. The Lions followed up with a crucial stop at the other end, which led to two free throws by Simpson to give the Lions their first lead of the game, 9-8, with 14:28 on the clock. The first half remained close, closing out with a 26-24 lead by the Bears. The Lions brought it to 34-30 with 16:24 to go in the second half after scoring four unanswered points, including an and-one by Simpson. Four points by Lizzy Stachon made it 46-42 with 7:18 to go, but Morgan State responded with 8-0 run, including five straight points from the charity stripe, and did not look back in handing Columbia the loss.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. ARMY
Army and Columbia have played each other 12 times since the all-time series began in 1992-93, with the Black Knights leading, 9-3. Coach Paul Nixon is 1-2 against Army, garnering his first win last season as Courtney Bradford scored 17 points and added 12 rebounds with three steals to lead Columbia to a 63-58 win in Levien Gym.

SCOUTING THE BLACK KNIGHTS
The Black Knights are currently 5-1 and riding a four game winning streak. Army is coming off a two-win road trip out west, defeating Weber State on 11/21 and Air Force on 11/23. The Black Knights are 1-1 on their home court at Christl Arena with its only setback of the season coming at West Point against St. Francis (N.Y.) on 11/12.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP
Once again, Columbia brings back two seniors who will be crucial to Columbia's success in the 2012-13 season. Senior co-captains Brittany Simmons and Tyler Simpson will lead the Lions into the year. Simpson earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy recognition following a breakout junior season last year and led Columbia in scoring, averaging 12.6 points per game, including a career-high 26 points against Brown. Simmons bounced back from an injury in 2010-11 to see action in 18 games, during which she posted a season-high nine points against Vermont in the season opener and again vs. Morgan State.

(N)OTT JUST A ROOKIE
Columbia first-year Bailey Ott was selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week on November 19. Ott stepped it up in a big way to help lift Columbia to its first win of the season against Fairleigh Dickinson. The 5-11 forward/center scored a game-high 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field while grabbing eight rebounds in the 54-47 victory. Earlier that week, Ott finished one point and one rebound shy of her first career double-double as she recorded nine points and nine boards in the loss to Wagner.

BRADFORD BLOCK PARTY
Courtney Bradford has eight blocks this season, including a career-high four blocks at Vermont, and currently leads the Ivy League with 2.7 blocks per game.
