Women's Basketball Falls to Cal State Fullerton

NEW YORK - Cal State Fullerton shot nearly 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from behind the arc to defeat Columbia women's basketball 80-54 in Levien Gymnasium this afternoon.

The game was played at noon to accommodate more than 2,000 New York CIty School system students and their teachers for New York City Education Day.

Fullerton led by as many as nine early in the first half, but a layup by Amara Mbionwu and two free throws by Carolyn Binder initatied a 9-0 run that tied the game at 20-20 with 8:12 to play in the first.

Kathleen Iwuoha had two layups in the next minute to help the TItans push the lead back out to four.  Fullerton then scored on free throws the next three possesions before Chante Miles hit a layup to extend the lead out to 10, 34-24 with just under four minutes to play in the half.

Columbia got a jumper and free throws from Tori Oliver to keep the lead just under 10 with a 1:30 remaining in the first half, but Chante Miles scored with 25 seconds left to give the Titans a 10-point lead at the break. 

Fullerton opened up the second stanza on a 15-5 run to extend the lead to 20 points, and did not look back.

The Lions shot just 30 percent from the floor and 29 percent from the three.  Fullerton shot 48.2 from the floor and 40 percent from the three, including 50 percent from the three in the second half. 

The Titans out-rebounded Columbia 45-33, and added 16 assists and four blocked shots.  The Lions totaled seven steals and committed just 11 turnovers to Fullerton's 12.

Oliver led the Lions with 11 points and five rebounds, while Courtney Bradford finished with eight points, seven rebounds, an assist and four steals.  Binder finsihed with 11 points, three rebounds and three assists.  

Columbia returns to action on Sunday, November 24 at Farleigh Dickinson University at 2 p.m.
