Women's Basketball Begins Four-Game Homestand Against Lehigh and Bryant

LIONS’ STATUS
Columbia brought its nine-game losing skid to a halt on Saturday, Dec. 21, knocking off Kennesaw State on the road, 78-61. Sophomore Sara Mead went off for a career-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting and senior Taylor Ward chipped in a season-best 15 points. Saturday’s game against Lehigh is the first of a four-game homestand that will see the Lions close the out-of-conference portion of the schedule before hosting Cornell on Jan. 18 to begin Ivy League play.

MOUNTAIN HAWKS’ STATUS
Lehigh hosted the Christmas City Classic last weekend, defeating Vermont, 87-78, in the tournament-opener, but fell to Delaware, 77-64, the next day. The Mountain Hawks stand at 7-3 on the season and are averaging 76.5 points per game, having scored over 85 three times this season. Sophomore Kerry Kinek paces the Lehigh offense with 18.9 ppg and 7.4 rpg. Saturday’s matchup against the Lions will be the final non-confernce contest for Lehigh before beginning Patriot League action on Jan. 2 against Colgate.

COLUMBIA VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE
The Lions are 0-2 this season against teams from the Patriot League, having fallen to Lafayette and Colgate. Columbia is 15-37 all-time against teams currently in the Patriot League. It has had the most success against Colgate, going 4-4 in eight meetings against the Raiders.

BULLDOGS’ STATUS
Bryant will enter Monday’s game against Columbia on a two-game win streak, having knocked off fellow Ivy League opponent Dartmouth, 79-69, and UMass-Lowell, 100-52, in its more recent contests. The Bulldogs sport a ballanced offensive attack that features four players that average at least 11 ppg. Bryant fields an expereienced lineup, primarily starting three seniors and a graduate student, with sophomore Breanna Rucker and Morgan Olander splitting starting time.

COLUMBIA VS. THE NEC
Columbia is 1-2 this season against the NEC with a season-opening win at LIU Brooklyn and losses to Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis Brooklyn. All-time, the Lions are 31-43 against opponents currently in the NEC with the Lions best overall mark coming against St. Francis, 12-7.

TO 50 AND BEYOND!
The Lions scored 50 or more points in a single half for just the ninth time in program history when they posted 50 in the second half at Kennesaw State on Dec. 21. The Lions record for points in a half is 57, set back in the first half of an 86-44 win against Manhattanville on Nov. 29, 2001. Only once in Columbia women’s basketball history have the Lions scored 50 points in each half of one game; that feat occured on Jan. 12, 1987 in a 101-51 win over Smith.

MEAD’S MAGIC
Sophomore Sara Mead played the best game of her career on Saturday, Dec. 21, leading Columbia to a 78-61 triumph over Kennesaw State. The Winchester, Va., native counted out 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including three triples. The 18 points and six made FGs were career bests, while the three makes from long range, as well as her five assists, matched her best career marks.
